A traditional picture of Hypnosis is that of the Hypnotist with staring eyes, swinging a pocket watch in front of his victims to gain power over them, or the stage show where some hapless individual is made to make make a fool of himself to amuse an audience.
This is a far cry from modern clinical hypnotherapy, which is increasingly being recognised by main stream medicine. Some GP’s have trained in hypnotherapy, and NICE, The National institute for Clinical Excellence, has approved hypnotherapy, for use in the treatment of IBS. So, how does it work? We have both a conscious and subconscious mind which work together to help us live our lives.

Our conscious mind is responsible for logic, reason,decision making and directs all our physical actions. Our subconscious is the storage of what we have learnt and experienced throughout our life, beliefs, memories, situations , images we have seen.Emotions are messages sent from the subconscious. Accessing the subconscious during Hypnotherapy, can help change these beliefs and memories, which have caused phobias, fears, lack of self esteem, and confidence, diet problems, and stress. What is a trance? We all go into a trance like state regularly during our waking hours. Have you ever driven on a familiar route, and not remembered part of the journey? Have you ever ‘tuned out’ during a boring meeting? This is that state used in Hypnotherapy, a feeling of daydreaming and relaxation, where suggestions that will be of benefit, can be given to the subconscious.

I hope you have the chance for a holiday this year. I love to fly off on holiday, but as one who also loves to shop,  weight restrictions on baggage can sometimes be a problem. I once had the embarrassing experience of having to empty some stuff out of an overweight suitcase, in front of a stern faced check in clerk, and an impatient, but somewhat amused queue!

Excess baggage – as well as the holiday kind, there is also the emotional baggage we all carry with us. We all are the sum of our experiences in life, and a  barely  remembered incident  can have an effect years later. ‘I am no good at  …’ can result from a dismissive comment from a teacher years before, ‘eat up you must leave a clean plate’ may result in weight problems, because the natural signals to stop eating are ignored. Families too often, allbeit in a light hearted way label children as ‘the shy one’ the ‘clumsy one’ or the picky eater. These comments all too often follow into adult life as a self fullfilling prophesy.

The feeling of rejection after a relationship breakup, the feeling of inadequacy after living with criticism all can effect how we feel now, today, and can cloud our future happiness.
